Circumcision and Nudity

Cultures where people run around naked typically don't practice circumcision while cultures that do typically require people to be clothed and may even have taboos against seeing each other naked.

In some way it makes sense, especially for people who live close to nature. If one has to run around without clothing surrounded by the local plant life one wants as much protection on his delicate parts as possible, the foreskin protects the glans from minor cuts and scrapes that would damage it.

But once people start wearing clothing this protection is no longer needed and the foreskin becomes just an extra space to collect decomposing stuff that may cause irritation and inflammation. In other words from an asset it turn into a liability.

There is also a matter of cultural customs. In the Greco-Roman antiquity men did often appeared in front of each other naked. It wasn't considered to be indecent so long as one's glans was not visible. To avoid mishaps they even used a "dog-leash" (kynodesme) tied to the front of the prepuce to prevent it from slipping back and exposing the glans. A bare glans was associated with sexual arousal and showing your glans in public was considered to be barbaric.

Modern society somewhat relaxed these rules, at least in industrialized nations, and you either can't walk around naked at all in some places, or you are allowed to be naked even with your glans showing whether you are circumcised or just keeping your foreskin retracted.

In the US the majority of guys are circumcised so in a locker room a bare glans is expected and in fact it may be embarrassing to have an ant eater.

But even in countries where circumcision is not a common practice there seems to be a trend, especially among younger guys, to keep their foreskins retracted 24/7 thereby reaping some (most?) of the health benefits of circumcision without having to go through surgery and permanently altering their bodies.

They will naturally walk around with a bare glans in public showers and locker rooms and it is generally accepted that one no longer needs a covered glans to be considered 'decent' where casual nakedness is otherwise accepted.

It does create a third group in the circumcision debate. There are the intactivists who insist that the glans must be kept covered in foreskin at all times least it will dry out and become numb. There are of course those of us who think circumcision is the greatest thing since sliced bread. And then there is this third group who would keep their glans bare at all times, but would not even consider surgically removing their foreskin thereby setting themself apart from both opposing sides and opting for a third possibility that is somehow in between. We humans are just really strange creatures...

This practice is often referred to as autocircumcision, especially if one starts doing it at a younger age, and his foreskin never fully develops to its adult size, thus it can no longer cover the glans after reaching adulthood, thereby really mimicking a loose circumcision.

I personally don't mind being seen naked. I don't think genitals are uglier than any other body parts or that the world would end if society gave up prudery. What I am shy about is being seen aroused. For me that is a private matter not to be displayed in front of others.

I grew up in a non-circumcising society and at that time it was uncommon to appear in front of others with one's glans uncovered, even in showers people tried to hide when they washed their privates, if they did even wash under the skin at all. When I still had my foreskin I was very embarrassed to be seen with my foreskin pulled back, especially because I had a tendency to get a boner as soon as I retracted it, and it felt awkward to be seen like that by my peers.

I am now quite thoroughly circumcised and I can no longer actually cover my glans, even out of modesty. Interestingly it has made me feel less awkward about it than if I had to pay attention to wearing my foreskin up or down.

For me being seen with my circumcised penis or seeing someone else's is just like seeing each-other's tattoos or some other form of body art. I have never even thought of it as anything sexual, thus there is no implied indecency.

On this blog I used my own photos as illustrations because it would be hypocritical to advocate for circumcision if I was too embarrassed to show my own cut. I don't think that being seen naked should be embarrassing or taboo.

This is not a porn blog, so I am trying draw a line at being casually naked, never sexually explicit, and only show things one would not give a second thought in a locker room, on a nude beach, in a spa or in a college dorm.
